Van Olst Stables - Breeding |
Van Olst Stables has grown up in the last few years to what it is today. An especially important link in the chain is the rearing of the young horses.
The philosophy is:
- Buying of Foals
- The rearing of the young horses
- Selecting, schooling and training the young horses
- Sale of horses at 3 and 4 years of age
In the last few years 90% of the buys are from our own customers (by our own stallions) the numbers are around 80 to 100 foals per year. Approximately 50% of these foals will go to a new environment (be sold). The remaining foals we hold ourselves for our own breeding/rearing program. With this policy in mind the knife cuts both ways. Firstly we have our own customers (the breeders), which we can help with selling their foals and secondly, in this manner we are able to provide ourselves with our own foals.
Throughout the years, in different manners and in different places, we have successfully raised our young horses but we have now expanded to the point where we can raise our youngstock in our own environment. We now have the capacity for fifty foals per year including the subsequent training, which follows.
Concerning our feeding regimes and stabling etc. we are actively advised and assisted by the Cehave feeding specialist Kees Naalden. This includes, for example, the feeding regimes within the housing and also control of the food value in the hay, silage etc.
When the young horses reach the age of +/- 18 months they are all clinically x-rayed (every year around the 1st December). The results of these investigations are the determining factors in the further progress in the career of the horses.
The month of August is the very important selection month for the young horses. During this period we must decide if the horses should be presented for the stallion selections, and if this is the case for which studbook. Naturally we always hope for an approved stallion, which can compliment our own stud station, and if the circumstances permit we will try to retain them.
The total breeding and rearing program is a very expensive business. Strict selection is the only manner in which to continue. From January onwards the stallions and geldings, which have reached their third year, begin under the saddle, the target being the sale.
The sale of our young horses we deal with directly and/or naturally via our annual E.F.S. auction, which we began in 2000 (see E.F.S.).
